2026 APAC H1 Analysis: Leveraging the Short Getaway Trend

1. APAC Growth Beat the Global Average

This year, conflict in the Middle East sent airfares and oil prices climbing, and travelers everywhere felt the pinch — global international travel growth slowed to just 0.4%.

Still, APAC showed some real resilience, growing around 1% — comfortably ahead of the global average. In other words: the overall environment is tough, but Asia is still one of the brighter spots in global travel right now.

With the outlook uncertain, the international tourism body has also revised its full-year growth forecast down from an optimistic 3–4% to just 1–2%. That might sound conservative, but it points to something important: travelers are going to be a lot more deliberate about picking trips that are "actually worth it." For operators who can tap into that value-conscious mindset, this is actually a great chance to stand out.

2. Top Arrivals: Hong Kong, Japan, and Malaysia Take the Lead

If we're just looking at who pulled in the most visitors, the top three this half were Hong Kong, Japan, and Malaysia — all neck and neck, each around the 20-million-visitor mark, solidly holding the three biggest markets in APAC. Right behind them: Thailand, South Korea, and Singapore, followed by Indonesia and Taiwan, with Australia and the Philippines rounding out the top ten.

3. High-Growth Markets: South Korea, Hong Kong, and New Zealand

Flip the question — who's growing fastest? — and the top five are South Korea (+21%), Hong Kong (+18%), New Zealand (+15%), Australia (+12%), and the Philippines (+11%), all double-digit; Indonesia's close behind at +10%. South Korea led by a mile, cracking 20%+ and hitting a record high — K-pop and K-drama clearly still have plenty of steam, proof cultural content can drive tourism for the long haul.

What's interesting is that every APAC market is winning differently: some ride cultural appeal (South Korea), some lean on long-haul and premium travelers (Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia), some benefit from visa-free access and better flight connections (the Philippines, Indonesia). Good news for operators — there's more than one playbook, so no need to fixate on copying a single country.

Japan — a mature market with a huge base — also showed real resilience: even with some shifts in its visitor mix, strong growth from South Korea and Taiwan kept the momentum going. A solid reminder for every market: a diversified customer base matters.

4. Where Is Everyone Going? Asian Travelers Are Leaning Into “Short Getaways”

The clearest trend this half is that travelers are increasingly choosing shorter trips closer to home, moving within the region. And honestly, that's a good thing for APAC as a whole — spreading travelers across more destinations means spreading opportunity across more operators too.

  • Chinese travelers: Outbound numbers keep climbing, with South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and Hong Kong/Macau as top picks — giving those destinations a nice boost.

  • Taiwanese travelers: Outbound numbers hit a record high, with Japan, China, and South Korea as the top three, together making up over 60% of the market — proof that short-haul Asia trips are still Taiwanese travelers' go-to.

  • Within Southeast Asia: Over 70% of Malaysia's visitors are actually fellow ASEAN travelers, with Singapore as the single biggest source; growth from the Philippines and Indonesia has also been strong, showing intra-regional travel is heating up.

  • Long-haul markets are still in the game too: Visitors from the US, Italy, and Spain are still growing at double-digit rates, showing Asia hasn't lost its pull for travelers coming from farther away.

  • One to watch: India. The numbers are still small, but with China-India flight routes reopening, interest in travel between the two has surged — India could well be the next big source market worth getting excited about.

Bottom line: nearby destinations are getting more popular, and audiences more segmented. Travelers aren't just chasing "what's trending" — they're asking "where's worth going, good value, and actually me." Real opportunity for operators willing to differentiate.

5. Looking Ahead: Strategic Insights for Tour Operators

1. Diversify to Grow

A broader customer base unlocks new business opportunities. The data makes it clear: markets with a richer mix of source countries handle risk better. Now's the time to take stock of where your customers are actually coming from, and start developing some newer source markets — think the Philippines, Indonesia, India — so growth isn't riding on just one engine.

2. Capture Value Seekers

Sure, the full-year forecast is on the conservative side, but that also means travelers are comparing more and doing their homework more carefully — if you can clearly communicate "this is worth it," you'll actually stand out more easily. Lean into itineraries that hit on "great value" and "easy, nearby trips" — that's exactly what this demand is looking for.

3. Ride the "Short Getaway" Wave

Align your offerings with this booming trend. Whether it's K-pop fans, families, or older travelers, more and more people are gravitating toward destinations that are closer and more convenient. Design dedicated itineraries for different customer segments so every type of traveler feels like "this was made just for me."
